Detox 101

So you decided to get clean, congratulations! I am so proud of you. Many of us went to detox because we needed a place to stay, to please someone else, or to take a vacation from using. But this time your ready, you want this! So let me give you a few tips to make your detox easier and more likely to become a long term recovery.

Find a detox that will provide you with all the services you need. Most addicts need some sort of mental health issue. A detox that handles dual diagnosis is your best bet to a long lasting recovery. Detoxing is just the surface. You need to treat the reasoning behind your addiction. You must be honest with yourself and your care providers. They may test you out on a few medications and keep in mind they may take a few days or weeks to help.

Find a long term treatment plan. Will you use MAT or taper off your detox meds while inpatient. MAT can be an awesome way to get your first year clean then taper off. If your addiction is based by some sort of pain issue like dental or back problems this will give you time to get the underlaying cause treated.

Where are you going once you leave? Can you return home? Is your home safe? Are you homeless? While in detox speak with your case worker about your options. Moving into a sober living house can seem scary but can be a game changer. They give you a stricter living situation but still the freedom to learn to live your normal life without using.

Remember you will make it through this phase. The pain and suffering is only temporary. Pain is weakness leaving the body. When your laying in bed sweating, cold chills, puking your stomach acid up remember this will only get better and life will go on and you NEVER have to feel this way again.

A few more tips:

Dress in layers. you will be hot then cold then hot then cold.

Lay towels down on your bed. Your gonna sweat like crazy.

Eat small bits of cracker. Throwing up crackers is better then dry heaving.

Drink water or Gatorade!! Dehydration can KILL you!

Keep a journal! Write every horrible symptom down. If you ever feel like your going to relapse, read it. Remember the pain.

Don’t do it on your own. Go to a inpatient detox. You will be less likely to give up and relapse.
